First Press Conference
DSK consortium organized a Press Conference at the National Press Club on 26th August 2021. The event had two primary aims: to elevate the faded voices of slum dwellers through media to the public and to pursue government authorities to put attention towards better implementation of the respective environmental protection laws and policies. 110 attendees (26 women and 84 men) participated, of whom 68 were media representatives. The conference presented facts related to the dire state of waste management in slums and highlighted the plight of slum dwellers.
The 3R approach for environmental discussion (reducing waste, reusing, and recycling resources and goods) was highlighted in the Environment Conservation Act of 1995, according to speakers. In addition, ministries are empowered to enact ordinances for environmental conservation issues, rather than pursuing the elaborate and time-consuming procedures for laws/policies. Accordingly, the City Corporation Ordinance 1983 has been abolished with the newly reformed City Corporation Act 2009 under Local Government Division – assigning the responsibility of waste collection to city corporations. Incorporating slum dwellers in this service system is important to democratize the process, and to improve the living standards of slum dwellers.
